Cyber Security for Effective Demand Side Management and AMI Projects
N-Dimension’s article published in Electricity Today July/August issue.
Written by Peter David Vickery

It has been recognized that power & energy organizations are amongst the top 3 industries to be security targets. The existence of cyber vulnerabilities in the electric system has been confirmed by numerous organizations, including the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the US-Canada Power System Outage Task Force, the U.S. Department of Energy, and the Canadian Energy Infrastructure Protection Division.
AMI projects are also being over a variety network types including wireless technologies such as ZigBee, WiFi, and cellular. As recently explain by U.S. Justice Department Information Technology Security Specialist, each of these wireless communication environments comprises inherent cyber security challenges.
To counter those vulnerabilities and ensure the success of their AMI project, distribution operators should therefore put in place a comprehensive cyber security program. This program should be an integral part of the planning and design phases of the AMI project to ensure that service reliability and information privacy are part of the underpinnings of the AMI deployment. Operators must ensure that cyber security risks are well identified and that appropriate measures are in place to address those risks. Please click here for the copy of this article.

N-Dimension is awarded a key role in Ontario's Smart Meter Project
Electrical Distributors Association, EDA Weekly
April 12, 2006

"AESI Inc. and N-Dimension Solutions Inc. have collaborated to provide a security assessment of the Smart Meter pilot projects currently underway by the Ontario Utilities Smart Meter (OUSM) working group; currently comprised of 46 LDC (Local Distribution Company) participants representing 3.7 million electric end users, and 1.7 million gas consumers. The need for security features is identified, but not clearly defined in the Ministry of Energy's functional specifications for Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI). This process will allow utilities to understand the security currently inherent to their systems, and will also engage the Ministry and Regulators on recommended future processes for ensuring our AMI networks are securely deployed."
